The Government of The Gambia has announced the arrest of Sanna Manjang, a former member of the notorious Junglers squad, who has long been implicated in grave human rights violations committed under the administration of former President Yahya Jammeh.
According to an official statement issued on Saturday, Manjang was captured in the early hours of the morning during a coordinated security operation in the Casamance Region of southern Senegal. The operation was jointly conducted by security forces of Senegal and The Gambia, marking a significant breakthrough after nearly eight years of efforts to track him down. Manjang has been on the run since January 2017.
Manjang is prominently featured in the findings of The Gambiaโs Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC), which links him to torture, enforced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings carried out by the Junglers. His apprehension is seen as a major step toward justice for victims of the Jammeh-era abuses and a boost for ongoing accountability processes in the country.
The Ministry of Information confirmed that arrangements are underway for Manjangโs repatriation to The Gambia, where he is expected to face due process in accordance with the law.
The government also reaffirmed its commitment to justice, rule of law, and the protection of human rights, assuring the public that the stability and security of the country remain paramount and will not be compromised.
Additionally, The Gambia extended its appreciation to the Government of Senegal for its steadfast cooperation and solidarity in matters of regional security and justice. Authorities pledged to keep the public updated as the case progresses.
