GID Intercepts 50 Would-Be Migrants In Two Operations

The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) has intercepted a total of 50 would-be migrants in two separate operations as authorities intensify the crackdown on irregular migration across the country.
The first major interception took place on September 8, 2026, at Balinghore Riverside, where GID personnel from the Farafenni office, working alongside sister security services, stopped 35 would-be migrants.
According to the GID, all 35 individuals are Malian nationals and were intercepted following credible information received by the authorities before they could proceed with their intended journey.
The operation also resulted in the seizure of a substantial amount of equipment and supplies allegedly linked to the planned movement.
Among the items seized were 85 gallons of fuel, three barrels of fuel, a generator, two Yamaha engines, 35 heavy-duty diesel containers, two life jackets, 46 smartphones and assorted foodstuffs.
The 35 individuals and the seized items have been taken into custody as authorities proceed with further processing in accordance with established procedures.
In a separate operation at Walymang Lodge, immigration authorities intercepted another 15 would-be migrants, comprising eight females and seven males.
The two operations bring the total number of people intercepted to 50, underscoring the scale of the authorities’ ongoing efforts to disrupt irregular migration activities.
The GID says the latest operations demonstrate its determination to strengthen border surveillance and dismantle networks facilitating irregular migration, while preventing the loss of lives associated with dangerous and unsafe migration routes.
The Department has also appealed to members of the public to provide timely and credible information on suspected irregular migration activities.
The GID says continued cooperation with other security agencies, local communities and relevant stakeholders will remain critical as it steps up efforts to protect the country’s borders and promote safe, orderly and regular migration.
