President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye delivered a powerful and symbolic address during Senegal’s 66th Independence Day celebrations, signaling a major shift in national policy while reinforcing regional alliances and national unity.

Speaking after a grand military parade in Thiès, Faye announced the beginning of a new era of decentralized independence celebrations, breaking from tradition and taking the historic event beyond Dakar. The move, he said, is aimed at promoting national inclusion and territorial equity, with Thiès, once a stronghold of resistance to colonial rule, chosen as the symbolic starting point.

In a striking display of regional solidarity, the Senegalese leader warmly welcomed his counterpart, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, who attended as guest of honor alongside a Gabonese military detachment. Faye described the visit as a reflection of “exceptional” ties between the two nations, declaring that the Gabonese leader was “at home” in Senegal.

Beyond ceremony, the President sent a firm message about the evolving role of the military, emphasizing that Senegal’s Defense and Security Forces must go beyond territorial defense to actively support national development projects and major global events.

With eyes on the upcoming Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026, Faye assured the world that Senegal is fully prepared. He revealed that comprehensive security measures are already in place, promising a safe and successful hosting of what he called a “historic event on African soil.”

The parade itself, marked by precision and coordination between military, paramilitary, and civilian participants, was presented as proof of a strong “Army-Nation” bond, one that the President praised as vital to Senegal’s stability and progress.

Closing his speech on a high note, Faye called for unity, sovereignty, and prosperity, rallying citizens with a pan-African message: “Long live a united Africa!”
