The Gambia has confirmed that Cameroonian opposition figure Issa Tchiroma Bakary is being hosted in the country after arriving on 7 November 2025, following weeks of political unrest in Cameroon. In a statement issued by the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services on Sunday, the government said Bakary is in Banjul purely on humanitarian grounds, in line with African solidarity and efforts to ensure his safety while diplomatic discussions continue.
Bakaryโs presence in The Gambia comes in the aftermath of Cameroonโs disputed presidential election, which took place on 12 October. Tensions escalated shortly after partial results were released, prompting Bakary to declare that he had won the vote with 54.8 percent, a claim rejected by state authorities. According to official results announced by the Constitutional Council, long-serving President Paul Biya was declared the winner with 53.66 percent, while Bakary was credited with 35.19 percent. The announcement triggered widespread protests in several cities, including Douala, where clashes between security forces and opposition supporters resulted in multiple fatalities, heightening fears of a broader political crisis.
Despite the official declaration, Bakary has refused to concede, accusing Cameroonโs institutions of orchestrating what he called an โelectoral theft.โ He insisted that he remains the legitimate winner and urged his supporters to stay mobilized. His defiant stance has contributed to rising tensions in a country already grappling with unrest tied to disputed governance and long-standing grievances.
In its statement, the Gambian government stressed its commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all African Union member states, making clear that the country will not serve as a base for any subversive activity against another nation. It added that Bakaryโs temporary stay does not imply political endorsement but reflects a humanitarian gesture amid a volatile situation.
The Gambia also confirmed it is working with regional partners, including Nigeria, to support efforts aimed at reaching a peaceful and negotiated settlement to Cameroonโs post-election tension. Authorities assured the public that further updates will be provided as consultations progress.
Bakaryโs sudden arrival in Banjul underscores the severity of the political standoff in Cameroon and highlights broader regional concerns about stability, governance, and credible democratic processes across the continent.
