Tensions heightened in the capital this morning after members of the United Democratic Party (UDP) marched to the Gambia Police Force Headquarters in Banjul to show solidarity with Borry S. Touray, who was invited and later charged by police for alleged incitement to violence.

In an official statement released earlier, the GPF confirmed that Touray was summoned on Thursday, December 4, and confronted with statements he allegedly made which authorities say were capable of provoking unrest and threatening public safety. According to the police, his remarks constitute โ€œIncitement to Violenceโ€ under Section 58 of the Criminal Offences Act, 2025. The GPF stressed that incitement is a serious offence under Gambian law and affirmed that such conduct will be met with the full force of the law, noting that the inquiry remains active.

This morning, a large group of UDP supporters and senior party figures moved to the Police Headquarters demanding access to their detained colleague. Among those present were the Chairman of the Brikama Area Council, Yankuba Darboe and several National Assembly Members who had earlier boycotted the ongoing budget speech in protest. Their decision to abandon the parliamentary proceedings underscored the level of solidarity within the party and signaled a strong political statement against what they viewed as the unjust handling of their colleague.

Our reporter at the scene described a calm but determined crowd, with supporters insisting on their right to show solidarity while calling for what they described as fair treatment for Touray. The police maintained order as the delegation held discussions with officers at the headquarters.
