Mayor of Banjul City Council, Rohey Malick Lowe, has strongly criticized what she described as a sudden push for media regulation, questioning the timing and motives behind the move.

In a statement shared on social media, Lowe argued that the urgency around new media rules raises concerns, particularly as similar measures were not prioritized under previous administrations. She suggested that such actions may be aimed at frustrating leadership, especially when women are at the forefront.

The mayor also expressed solidarity with Isatou Keita, President of the Gambia Press Union (GPU), praising her leadership and resilience.

Lowe warned against what she described as attempts to undermine independent journalism, emphasizing that any effort to silence media voices would have broader implications for society.

“When they target independent journalists, they target all of us,” she stated, urging Gambians to remain vigilant and supportive of press freedom.

Her remarks come amid growing debate over potential media reforms in The Gambia, with stakeholders closely watching developments and their implications for freedom of expression.
