Malick Ndiaye has dramatically resigned as President of Senegal’s National Assembly, sending shockwaves across Senegal’s political landscape amid growing national tensions and intense public scrutiny over the country’s political direction.

In an emotional and carefully worded statement to the nation, Ndiaye revealed that his decision came after “deep reflection” and was motivated by what he described as the need to protect state institutions, preserve national cohesion and place Senegal’s interests above all else.

The unexpected resignation marks a major political development in Senegal, particularly as Ndiaye was considered one of the influential figures within the ruling PASTEF movement.

“After deep reflection, matured in silence, responsibility and the sense of statehood, I have decided to resign,” Ndiaye declared, signaling what many observers may interpret as deeper political undercurrents within the country’s leadership circles.

During his tenure as head of parliament, Ndiaye said he worked tirelessly to strengthen the National Assembly, push institutional reforms and promote transparency and modernization within the legislative body.

But beyond the formalities of his resignation, the tone of his statement strongly emphasized concerns over the future of democracy, institutional stability and civil peace in Senegal.

“At the moment I leave this high office, I remain deeply convinced that the stability of our institutions, preservation of civil peace, national cohesion and the higher interest of Senegal must remain our common compass,” he warned.

The resignation is expected to fuel political speculation across Senegal, with analysts closely watching whether the move signals widening cracks within the political establishment or broader strategic realignments ahead of future national political battles.

Ndiaye, however, insisted he was not abandoning public service, promising to continue working “with the same commitment and loyalty” for the Senegalese people and the country’s democratic future.

He also thanked supporters of PASTEF for their unwavering loyalty and commitment to the party’s transformation agenda.

The sudden exit of one of Senegal’s top state officials now raises fresh questions about the evolving political climate in the West African nation, with many expected to await further reactions from government authorities and political actors in the coming days.
