The Managing Director of National Water and Electricity Company, Mr. Gallo Saidy, has issued a stark warning that ongoing load shedding across the country could persist for the long term, as The Gambia grapples with a worsening electricity crisis.
Speaking at a press conference today, Saidy revealed that the recent outages affecting the Greater Banjul Area and West Coast Region are the result of a serious gap between electricity demand and available supply. He stressed that NAWEC has been forced to implement load shedding as an emergency measure to prevent a total system collapse.
“This is a global problem,” Saidy said, pointing to the impact of the ongoing international crisis, including tensions involving Iran, which he said are disrupting fuel supply chains and driving up costs for power generation.
He warned that the load shedding schedule will remain in place as a long-term tool to manage future emergencies, urging Gambians to brace for continued disruptions while the situation evolves.
