Bamako, Mali – The High Council of Imghads and Allies (CSIA) has welcomed the renewed diplomatic engagement between Mali and Algeria, describing the restoration of relations between the two neighboring countries as a significant step toward strengthening peace, security and cooperation across the Sahel.
In a statement signed by its President, Alhaji Gamou, the CSIA praised recent decisions by the governments of Mali and Algeria to normalize diplomatic ties, including the reopening of their airspace and the return of ambassadors to their respective capitals.
The Council said the developments mark the beginning of a new era of trust and cooperation between the two countries after months of strained relations.
According to the CSIA, the renewed dialogue demonstrates the commitment of both governments to prioritize diplomacy and coordinated action in addressing the complex security, political and humanitarian challenges facing Mali, Algeria and the wider Sahelo-Saharan region.
“The reopening of airspace between the two countries and the return of ambassadors to their respective capitals constitute acts of trust that open the way for a new phase of cooperation,” the statement said.
The Council noted that the relationship between Mali and Algeria extends far beyond formal diplomacy, citing their shared history, longstanding cultural and human ties, common security interests and interconnected border communities as reasons why close cooperation remains essential.
It urged both governments to build on the current momentum by developing a partnership founded on mutual respect for sovereignty, trust, solidarity and coordinated efforts to combat terrorism, organized crime and other transnational threats affecting the region.
The CSIA also emphasized the importance of promoting economic and social development in border areas, arguing that stronger bilateral cooperation would bring tangible benefits to communities on both sides of the frontier.
The organization expressed gratitude to Mali’s Transitional President, General Assimi Goïta, and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune for what it described as “courageous decisions” that created the conditions for restoring relations between the two countries.
The Council said improved ties between Bamako and Algiers are critical to achieving lasting peace and stability in the Sahel, a region that continues to grapple with armed insurgencies, terrorism and humanitarian crises.
It encouraged both governments to maintain regular dialogue and deepen cooperation in a spirit of fraternity and shared responsibility, stressing that sustainable relations between Mali and Algeria are vital not only for the two nations but also for the security and development of the entire Sahelo-Saharan region.
The statement comes amid renewed diplomatic engagement between the two countries, raising hopes that closer collaboration could strengthen regional efforts to address the growing security and development challenges confronting the Sahel.
