Bamako, Mali – The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to supporting peace, stability and sustainable development in Mali and the wider Sahel region during a visit to the offices of the African Union Mission for Mali and the Sahel (MISAHEL) in Bamako.
Youssouf was received by the AU High Representative for Mali and the Sahel, Mamadou Tangara, along with staff of the mission in what the Commission described as a demonstration of its continued solidarity with the Government and people of Mali.
During the visit, the AU Commission Chairperson commended the mission’s personnel for their professionalism, dedication and commitment in advancing the African Union’s mandate in one of the continent’s most fragile regions.
He said the visit underscored the Commission’s unwavering support for MISAHEL as it continues to promote peace, political dialogue, stability and sustainable development amid the complex security and humanitarian challenges facing Mali and the Sahel.
“The visit reflects the African Union’s continued solidarity with the Government and people of the Republic of Mali, as well as the Commission’s unwavering support for MISAHEL in implementing its mandate,” the AU Commission said.
Mali and several countries across the Sahel have faced years of insecurity fueled by armed insurgencies, political instability and humanitarian crises, making regional cooperation a central pillar of the African Union’s peace and security agenda.
Responding to the visit, Mamadou Tangara expressed appreciation to the AU Commission Chairperson, describing the visit as a strong signal of the Commission’s confidence in the work of the mission and its personnel.
Tangara said the Chairperson’s presence would further motivate the mission as it continues working with Malian authorities and regional partners to advance peacebuilding, dialogue and development initiatives.
The visit forms part of the AU Commission Chairperson’s engagements aimed at strengthening the African Union’s presence in conflict-affected regions and reaffirming the continental body’s commitment to supporting member states in addressing security, governance and development challenges.
