Dakar, Senegal – Former Senegalese President Macky Sall has announced that he will return to Senegal on Friday, July 17, as part of consultations linked to his candidacy for the position of United Nations Secretary-General.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Sall said his visit forms part of a series of consultations and diplomatic engagements he has undertaken in support of his bid to lead the world’s largest multilateral organization.

During his stay, the former president is expected to hold talks with Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, whom he thanked in advance for agreeing to receive him.

“I sincerely thank President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye for the meeting we will have on this occasion,” Sall said.

The former head of state also expressed appreciation to Senegal’s religious and traditional leaders for their prayers and messages of support since the announcement of his candidacy.

He further thanked the Senegalese people for the encouragement he has received, saying their backing has strengthened his resolve as he pursues the international post.

Sall, who served as Senegal’s president from 2012 to 2024, noted that his visit to Dakar would be brief due to what he described as an especially demanding international schedule.

He said he plans to leave Senegal immediately after his meeting with President Faye but pledged to return at a later date to meet with political supporters and sympathizers to personally express his gratitude for their continued support.

“Because of a particularly busy international agenda, I will leave Dakar immediately after my meeting with President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, while awaiting another opportunity to return to meet party members and supporters to renew my appreciation and gratitude,” Sall stated.

The visit is expected to attract significant political attention, marking one of Sall’s notable returns to Senegal as he seeks international backing for his bid to become the next Secretary-General of the United Nations.
