The road to the next Africa Cup of Nations will be anything but easy for Gambia national football team after the Scorpions were drawn alongside football heavyweights Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire and an unpredictable Somalia side in a challenging Group C qualifier campaign.

For many Gambian football fans, the draw immediately sparked mixed reactions — excitement, fear and cautious optimism. On paper, the group appears one of the most difficult in the qualifiers, with former African champions Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire bringing continental pedigree, experience and star-studded squads into the race for qualification.

Côte d’Ivoire, reigning African football giants with a history of dominating continental tournaments, are widely expected to lead the group, while Ghana’s Black Stars remain one of Africa’s most respected football nations despite recent struggles on the international stage.

Yet despite the daunting task ahead, many supporters believe the Scorpions have already proven they can compete with Africa’s elite.

In recent years, The Gambia has transformed from continental underdogs into one of African football’s most exciting emerging teams. The country’s historic qualification to AFCON in 2021 and impressive performances on the continental stage changed perceptions about Gambian football and demonstrated the growing quality within the national squad.

Football analysts say the group could ultimately test the maturity and consistency of the Scorpions more than their talent.

Unlike previous campaigns where expectations were relatively low, The Gambia now enters the qualifiers carrying the pressure of proving their rise was not temporary. Questions remain over squad depth, preparation, defensive discipline and the ability to consistently perform against top-ranked African sides home and away.

At the same time, observers warn against underestimating Somalia, a side many may consider outsiders but one capable of disrupting the group dynamics if opponents fail to remain focused.

For Gambian supporters, however, the draw also presents opportunity. Facing continental giants offers the Scorpions another chance to announce themselves on Africa’s biggest football stage and continue building a new generation of national football identity.

If the team can maintain discipline, maximize home advantage and secure crucial points against direct rivals, qualification remains within reach despite the difficult path ahead.

The coming qualifiers are expected to test not only the talent of the players, but also the tactical strength, mental resilience and ambition of Gambian football itself.

For the Scorpions, Group C may be difficult — but it could also become the stage where another chapter of Gambian football history is written.
