Health authorities in Liberia have dismissed circulating social media reports claiming an Ebola outbreak in the country, insisting that there are currently no suspected, probable or confirmed cases of the deadly virus.

In a joint statement issued on May 23, the Ministry of Health Liberia, the National Public Health Institute of Liberia and the John F. Kennedy Medical Center said the reports were false and urged the public not to spread unverified information capable of creating unnecessary panic.

The institutions emphasized that official communication regarding disease outbreaks in Liberia would only come through the Ministry of Health and the National Public Health Institute of Liberia. Authorities also reassured the public that surveillance and preparedness measures remain active across the country, including monitoring at health facilities and border points.

The statement noted that Liberian health authorities continue to coordinate with international partners including the World Health Organization, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Africa CDC to strengthen disease prevention and response efforts.

Citizens were encouraged to maintain regular hygiene practices, avoid direct contact with bodily fluids of sick individuals and promptly report suspected illnesses to health authorities.
