Moroccan international and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) defender Achraf Hakimi has been named the 2025 African Footballer of the Year, becoming the first defender in more than five decades to win the continent’s most prestigious individual football award.
Hakimi received the honour at the CAF Awards ceremony in Rabat, capping off a remarkable year for both club and country. His win marks the first time a defender has claimed the title since Zaire’s Bwanga Tshimen in 1973.
The 27-year-old played a central role in PSG’s historic season, helping the French champions secure five major trophies, including the UEFA Champions League, Ligue 1 title, Coupe de France, and UEFA Super Cup. His consistent performances also contributed to Morocco’s ongoing campaign toward the 2026 World Cup.
Hakimi edged finalists Mohamed Salah and Victor Osimhen to take the award after being shortlisted among Africa’s top performers of the season.
In his acceptance remarks, the Moroccan star dedicated the award to young footballers across the continent and thanked his family, teammates, and supporters for their continued belief in him.
The ceremony also highlighted broader successes for Moroccan football. Ghizlane Chebbak won the Women’s Player of the Year award, while Yassine Bounou was named Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year, underscoring what officials described as a “golden night” for the North African nation.
This year’s edition further honoured Cape Verde coach Bubista, who was recognised as Coach of the Year for guiding his country to its first-ever World Cup qualification.
Hakimi’s win makes him the first Moroccan to claim the honour since Mustapha Hadji in 1998, cementing his place among Africa’s football greats and marking another milestone in his rapidly rising career.
