The Ministry of Youth and Sports The Gambia (MoYS), with support from ActionAid International The Gambia, has commenced a four-day First Quarter Performance Review Retreat in Kanilai aimed at recalibrating its youth and sports agenda.

The retreat, running from April 7 to 10, brings together ministry officials, departments, and satellite institutions at a time of growing expectations from young people nationwide. Officials say the gathering is designed to go beyond routine reviews, focusing instead on reflection, accountability, and improved service delivery.

In his opening remarks, Bakary Y. Badjie acknowledged progress made in the first quarter, including the continued deployment of graduates under the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSS) and expanded opportunities through initiatives such as the Youth Empowerment Project (YEP). He also highlighted sports programmes like the Ramadan Peace Football Tournament for promoting unity and community engagement.

Despite these gains, the Minister pointed to ongoing challenges, including delays in implementation, funding constraints, and weak coordination among institutions. He stressed that youth unemployment remains a critical concern, alongside gaps in sports infrastructure and investment.

โ€œThis retreat is a turning point,โ€ Badjie said, urging a shift toward results-driven performance.

Permanent Secretary Bulli Dibba echoed the call for accountability, emphasizing that future performance will be measured by tangible results. Meanwhile, Ousman Bojang highlighted the regionโ€™s large youth population, calling for increased investment in youth development and sports infrastructure.

As deliberations continue, expectations are high that outcomes from the retreat will translate into stronger coordination, improved programme delivery, and greater impact on the lives of young Gambians.
