Senegal’s ruling party, PASTEF, has officially reacted to reports of the dismissal of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, praising Sonko’s leadership and reaffirming its commitment to the party’s political vision.
In a communiqué issued by its National Political Bureau on Thursday, PASTEF said it had “taken note” of the president’s decision to end Sonko’s tenure as prime minister. The party paid tribute to what it described as Sonko’s “remarkable work” alongside his government, highlighting what it called his patriotism, discipline and dedication to serving the Senegalese people.
The statement described Sonko’s leadership as a “foundational stage” in Senegal’s citizen-led political transformation, adding that his vision and commitment had significantly shaped the country’s recent political direction.
Despite the reported shake-up, PASTEF said it remains focused on its upcoming party congress scheduled for June 6, 2026, while reaffirming its loyalty to the ideals and promises made to Senegalese voters during the 2024 elections.
The party also stressed that its political direction remains unchanged, pledging to continue defending sovereignty, patriotism, African unity and the interests of the Senegalese people amid the unfolding political developments.
