Russia has announced plans to open a new embassy in The Gambia as part of a broader diplomatic expansion that will also see new missions established in the Union of the Comoros, Liberia and Togo. The move forms part of Moscow’s strategy to strengthen its political, economic and trade engagement across Africa.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the four new diplomatic missions are the next phase of Russia’s growing presence on the continent. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, preparations for the embassy in The Gambia are already well advanced, with an ambassador appointed and logistical arrangements underway.

The embassy in Banjul is expected to enhance bilateral cooperation in areas including trade, investment, energy, tourism and education, while providing a permanent diplomatic presence to strengthen ties between the two countries. Russia has previously managed its relations with The Gambia through its embassy in Dakar, Senegal.

The announcement is part of Moscow’s wider push to achieve near-complete diplomatic representation across Africa. Russian officials say the expansion reflects the country’s commitment to deepening partnerships with African nations amid growing political and economic engagement on the continent.

For The Gambia, the opening of a resident Russian embassy is expected to create new opportunities for diplomatic cooperation and could pave the way for increased investment, commercial exchanges and people-to-people relations between Banjul and Moscow.
