Senegal’s inspiring 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign came to a heartbreaking end after suffering a dramatic 3-2 extra-time defeat to Belgium in the Round of 32 on Wednesday.
The Lions of Teranga looked destined for a place in the Round of 16 after goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaïla Sarr handed them a commanding 2-0 lead. However, Belgium produced an astonishing late comeback as Romelu Lukaku pulled one back in the closing minutes before Youri Tielemans equalized to force extra time.
With penalties looming, Belgium were awarded a controversial spot-kick following a VAR review deep into extra time. Tielemans calmly converted the decisive penalty to complete a remarkable comeback and send Belgium into the last 16, where they will face the United States.
The defeat was a bitter blow for Senegal, who had matched one of Europe’s strongest sides for much of the contest and came within minutes of recording one of Africa’s greatest World Cup knockout victories. Players and coaching staff were left devastated as the final whistle confirmed the end of their tournament.
Despite the painful exit, Senegal leaves the World Cup with pride after demonstrating resilience and quality throughout the competition, once again proving that African football can compete with the world’s best.
