UTG Holds Largest-Ever Convocation, Graduates Over 1,600 Students

The University of The Gambia (UTG) today marked a major milestone as it conferred degrees on more than 1,600 graduates during its 18th Convocation Ceremony—the largest in the institution’s history.

The ceremony was presided over by Chancellor and President of The Gambia, Adama Barrow, who reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening higher education and developing the country’s human capital. Prior to the event, the President hosted the university’s leadership at State House, where discussions focused on advancing the sector.

Addressing graduates and dignitaries, President Barrow commended the resilience and determination of Gambian students, emphasizing that education remains the cornerstone of national development and sovereignty. He noted that sustained investment in higher education is essential for building a self-reliant and prosperous nation.

Vice Chancellor Herbert Robinson described the record-breaking convocation as evidence of UTG’s rapid growth and increasing academic relevance. He highlighted the government’s support, particularly the expansion of the Faraba Banta Campus, which has boosted student enrolment, enhanced research capacity, and improved teaching facilities.

This year’s convocation also recorded several historic firsts, including the graduation of UTG’s inaugural Dentistry cohort and new PhD holders in specialised fields—underscoring the university’s expanding role in producing highly skilled professionals within the country.
