The Gambia Press Union (GPU) recently concluded a two-day intensive capacity-building workshop held on the 11th and 12th of November 2025, aimed at strengthening ethical journalism and promoting peace through responsible media practices.
The training brought together 40 journalists drawn from online, print, radio, and television platforms, focusing on key thematic areas including Ethics in Journalism, Tackling Hate Speech, Information Disorder, Reporting on Disability, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Implemented under the project “Enhancing Media Professionalism to Promote Peace and Social Cohesion in The Gambia,” the initiative was supported by UNESCO Dakar through the UN Peacebuilding Fund’s Infrastructure for Peace (I4P) programme.
According to the Gambia Press Union, the training was designed to equip journalists with the knowledge and skills needed to counter misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation, while promoting the responsible use of AI in newsrooms. Participants also learned how to ethically report on issues concerning persons with disabilities to foster inclusion and respect for human rights.
The GPU believes that empowering journalists in these critical areas will not only strengthen professional standards within the media sector but also contribute to maintaining peace and social harmony in The Gambia.
